Appointment Software Can Help Small Businesses Make It Through the Downturn
The reality of a tough economy has already come for many small businesses, as indicated by the over 10% quarter-by-quarter increase in the number of business bankruptcy filings over the last few quarters. Downsizing, smaller budgets, and more fickle customers mean that small business owners need ways to get their employees to work better as a unit to improve customer care. One tool that can assist in this effort is appointment software. Appointment software can unify your team’s schedules and provide real time information about employee-customer relations.
A number of major publications have been offering tips to employees on “ways to keep your job,” and the small business owner needs their own tools to improve employee performance. For instance, msnbc.com published an article a few years ago suggesting that one of the most important job-retention activities is to deliver on time. As much as this is reiterated in a business, it can be difficult to enforce when it is merely a date on someone’s personal calendar. However, when you schedule an appointment with your employees to either discuss their progress or meet with a customer to hand off deliverables, the deadline becomes more prominent and pressing. Appointment software accessible to all employees adds a degree of accountability as it creates unilateral awareness of the importance of a particular meeting.
Another way appointment software can help improve customer relationships is highlighted in a recent article from Entrepreneur.com, suggesting that employees “Act like your life depends on every customer: it might.” In general, customers have not scaled back their needs as much as their wallets, meaning they expect more for their money.
This doesn’t always translate into more sales; it may show up as more service or customer care.
One way for employees to view each customer as vital to the business is appointment software, letting the customer select convenient times. It also makes customers more visible to employees. As appointments are scheduled with pertinent customer information, employees can review this information before a meeting to have a stronger presence of mind of the customer in the office.
Finally, Forbes.com recommends that employees make themselves more visible to co-workers and managers through increased socialization, such as a business lunch or morale boosting meeting. As employees seek visibility, a single software application able to track all intra-office appointments allows managers and owners to keep tabs on employees as well as participate openly in such activities. Since a noncompetitive office environment can be just as caustic as a competitive one, appointment software can reduce the politicking by increasing visibility of meetings to everyone. In addition, it encourages more employees to be involved, which can translate into greater productivity with greater inclusion.
Because employees are feeling the pressure and customers are pulling back, the pressure is on the small business owner to navigate through the mess. Appointment software can help keep a small business in the black.
